DELPHINIUM :
A classic in English cottage flower beds, the delphinium has towering spires and clustered florets. The delphinium and its similar spiky sister, the larkspur, lend a country-garden feel to wedding arrangements while adding height and drama. Also available in white and pink, they are most spectacular in blues and purples-Wedgwood blue, mauve, violet and dark sapphire colors are available.Delphiniums can be found year-round, but most colors are at their peak from summer to early fall. Larkspur thrives from early to mid-summer.
Delphiniums have long been a favorite flower of gardeners, but they rarely appear in traditional bridal bouquets since their pure blue color is more often associated with masculinity. A pity: Their long, densely flowered stems can make them ideal for over-the-arm sheaths, and their stunning blue is neither male nor female, but just plain breathtaking.
The stems grow up to three and a half feet long, two-thirds of which bear its long flowers(which also come in white with tiny black centers) . Pull together several stems of various lengths for a natural fall that gushes with color and makes a truly royal statement.
Delphiniums are their showiest in early summer. Like many flowers, including poinsettias, parts of them are toxic, so handle them carefully-and be sure Fido doesn’t end up chomping on the bouquet!
