Baby’s Breath :
The delicate fragrance and petite bloom of baby’s breath is how this lovely little flower got its name, but that’s probably the last time anyone has said a nice word about it. After years of playing garish second fiddle in bouquets – kind of like a gangly plug of parsley next to the main course – baby’s breath is slowly shaking its status as a flower unworthy of consideration as a central player.
In fact, we think baby’s breath is perfectly suitable as the main course itself, and offer it as an example of how something can become special if it’s treated right. An ideal opportunity to put forward this notion came when a client, a self – described “biker chick,” asked us to create something befitting her lifestyle. This was a bride who derived a bit of glee each time she poked the Establishment in the eye, and she was damned if her bouquet would be anything a la Stepford.
We agreed that she would look silly carting a big, flouncy posy down the aisle. So we went with the streamlined profile of baby’s breath all by itself. We then harnessed it in leather and trimmed it in hardware. The result was a bouquet that was as lively and individual as our bride . Mission accomplished!
