SOMETHING BLUE
From delphiniums to freesias, blue flowers are available, in a variety of tones, so it’s surprise to discover that the UK’s favorite shade of flower is a winner with brides, too
When it comes to picking a bouquet, more and more brides are choosing to include blue flowers in their arrangements, which makes perfect sense when you consider that the colour is associated with peace, tranquillity and calm. Whether you want to inject a splash of colour in to your bouquet, or carry an arrangement that’s bursting with blue, there’s a bloom that’s perfect for you. One of the most popular blue flowers available is the dark blue, long – stemmed iris. This gorgeous blossom is not only beautiful to look at – it also has many meaningful associations. In Japan, for example, the iris has long been associated with fertility, while in Greek mythology, lris is the beautiful messenger between the Gods and mankind. This is why the flower also represents understanding, making it the perfect choice for any bride. However, it’s not just the iris that’s steeped in meaning. Why not add a hidden message just for your groom to spot as you glide down the aisle by sprinkling some other meaningful blue flowers into your bouquet? Graceful bluebells signify everlasting love, pretty sweet peas indicate pleasure, white violets denote faithfulness.
Blue flowers look great on their own, but also add a sense of style when combined with other popular blooms, and work best when they’re arranged with lots of foliage, whites, creams and yellows. Softer shades of blue flowers, such as delphiniums, work best when they’re mixed with pink blooms. And for a more regal choice, deep purple and violet flowers, such as anemones and stocks, make great alternatives to blue. There is a final – and perhaps the most important – reason to include at least a single blue bloom in your bouquet. You’ll be able to tick ‘something blue’ off your wedding outfit list, making one less thing for you to worry about!
